What is the Gonstead Technique?

Clarence Gonstead

Dr. Clarence Gonstead

Clarence S. Gonstead, a trailblazer in chiropractic and creator of the Gonstead System, developed his approach from his own experience overcoming rheumatoid arthritis and his expertise in mechanical engineering. He introduced the "foundation principle", referring to the pelvic structure as the cornerstone of the spine and created an adjusting system that cautions against spinal twisting and unspecific manipulations. The Gonstead System is well-known as the epitome of hands-on full-spine adjusting and is considered one of the leading chiropractic methods. It incorporates various diagnostic tools, including x-rays, palpation, visualization, and instrumentalization, to identify and treat vertebral subluxations with remarkable specificity. As a chiropractor that has treated 300 to 400 patients a day, Dr. Gonstead famously said "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
